Later in American history, Joshua Chamberlain—a college professor—became a Union infantry officer during the Civil War and famously held the line on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. He is depicted leading the charge downhill from Little Round Top, wearing a Union Colonel’s uniform modeled after Mathew Brady’s photograph. His sword signals the charge to his men, who have fixed bayonets after running out of ammunition. The base reflects the rocky terrain of the hill that the Regiment charged down, colliding into opposing forces. The patinas follow the same language as the other two figures, with the clothing rendered in a darker bronze and the face and hands polished to a brass-like finish while the base is rendered in a grey patina.
